To improve network security, the University network team will be making a change to the melbourne-qh2 and Melbourne floating IP network between 9am and 10am on Tuesday 24 September 2024
== What will happen
The routing for the melbourne-qh2 and Melbourne floating IP networks will change, making the networks flow through the new research datacentre firewall.
== What is the melbourne-qh2 and Melbourne floating IP networks
Your virtual machine is using the melbourne-qh2 network if it has an IP address like 115.146.84.X, 115.146.85.X, 115.146.86.X, 115.146.87.X, 115.146.88.X, 115.146.89.X, 115.146.90.X or 115.146.91.X in the network 'queensberry'
Your virtual machine is using the Melbourne floating IP network if your router IP has an address like 128.250.224.X or 128.250.225.X
== Why is it happening
The research datacentre firewall is being introduced to provide better cybersecurity to the research servers in the University datacentre, as well as the wider campus network.
== What will I notice
During the change, which is expected to take about 10 mins to implement, you may experience difficulty connecting to your virtual machine with a public IP address.
After the change is done, access to your virtual machine should be the same as it was before the change.
If you mount the University of Melbourne Netapp file shares on your virtual machine (with NFS using a research-nfs.unimelb.edu.au share), you may experience some difficulties accessing the Netapp. You may need to reboot your virtual machine if the access to the Netapp is still problematic after the change has finished.
== Any questions
If you have any questions, please submit a ticket using the normal channels
